Determine Your CPU Board
Agilent has shipped four different CPU boards with the PNA family over the past eight years.
Each CPU board has different boot-up and hard drive format requirements. So Agilent supplies several
hard disk drives which are imaged to work with the various combinations of CPU hardware and Microsoft
Windows operating systems. To find the correct hard drive part number, find your CPU board type from
this list, then find the hard drive part numbers in the table below.
- 266 MHz Pentium -- this board has one USB port
oriented horizontally and a single GPIB port.
(Shipped only with the E8356A/57A/58A until
February 2002. This board is now obsolete.)
- 500 MHz Pentium III -- this board has one USB
port oriented vertically and a single GPIB port.
(Shipped on various PNA models from November
2001 to April 2006. This board is now obsolete.)
- 1.1 GHz Pentium M -- this board has four USB
ports and two GPIB ports.
(Shipped on various PNA models from April 2006 to the present.)
- 1.6 GHz Pentium M -- PNA-X only. This board has
a non-removable internal hard drive.
(Shipped on the N5241A/42A PNA-X until September 2009.
This board is now obsolete.)
- 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo -- PNA-X only. This board has
an ejectable hard drive.
(Used on all N5244A/45A/64A models. Used on N5241A/42A from September
2009 to the present.)
Pictures of the CPU boards can be seen here.
Determine Your Hard Drive Part Number
From the very first PNA shipped in October 2000 until January 2009 (Sep '09 for some models), PNAs were shipped with PATA
(Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) interface hard drives. These hard drives have become
obsolete in the industry, and Agilent is now producing PNAs with SATA (Serial Advanced Technology
Attachment) drives. We have a supply of PATA drives to support our RF PNAs which are not easily
convertible to the SATA interface.
The tables below show the PATA and SATA part numbers for the various CPU and Operating System configurations.

Notes:
- The N8980A/81A/82A is an assembly which includes the SATA hard drive shown
and a mounting cradle for use in the E836xA/B and N5230A PNAs. A BIOS upgrade floppy disk is
also provided with the N8980A to enable PNA's purchased prior to April 2004 to run Windows XP.
- The N5242-60035 is an imaged HDD with no other hardware. The N5242-60037
is a CPU assembly which includes the N5242-60035 HDD. The N5242-60037 CPU assembly is recommended
for quick swapping purposes.
- The SATA drives were be introduced in January 2009, at which time the PATA
drives were discontinued. If you require a replacement for your PATA drive, you will need to
order the appropriate N898xA assembly in order to get the required serial-to-parallel adapter.
If your purchasing process does not allow the ordering of the N898xA model
number, you can order the applicable SATA hard drive part number and the N5230-60052 hard drive
cradle kit. This kit contains a collection of all the parts required to assemble the hard drive
cradle for the SATA drive. Please note that the N5230-60052 will not work with a PATA drive.
- This drive includes (and is already mounted to) the slide-out drawer that
fits into the CPU assembly. The hard drive is not available separately.
- If a 1.1GHz CPU is installed in any of these models, contact CTD-SoCo_support@agilent.com for a replacement. These models require a PATA HDD: E8356A/57A/58A, E8801A/02A/03A, and N3381A/82A/83A
